Film Trailer and Poster Analysis

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) Poster

Key Conventions

Central Image
Picture of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence)  holding a bow which can suggest that this film is an action film. The logo behind Katniss could be recognised by many of the fans of the franchise. The flames behind her has a synergy to the title which could be a USP.

Tagline
The word "Remember" could suggest that fans of the previous film will understand the meaning of the tagline compared to those who haven't seen the first film are left intrigued to find out who the "enemy" is. This could also make those who haven't seen the first film go watch it to understand the meaning.

Release Date
The date uses the same font compared to the Production Blurb which suggests that the date is more important compared to the Producers of the film. The date is at the bottom where most of the info is like the website.

Production Blurb
The blurb is located at the bottom with small text compared to the release date or title which are the main attraction compared to the blurb. Being at the bottom could also show that the blurb isn't the USP.

Key Convention

Fast Pace Editing
The cut between action scenes to tease action scenes which could make potential fans or could leave people intrigued about the film.

Stars
They're mainly shown on the majority of the trailer. those who are fans of the actor/s could think the film is good or maybe think its its the film's USP.

Music
The use of the music adds up some tension to make some emotion or communicate the feel of the action to the viewer persuading them otherwise but to watch the film.

Genre and NCIS

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Genre
Action

Narrative
The story is about the Avengers facing another catastrophic battle. A mechanical antagonist named Ultron. The Avengers would have to face off against this robotic enemy.

Character
The avengers re-assemble to take on the mechanical enemy called Ultron. The iconic team are known for their first film which has action as shown in the scenes of explosions as expected from most action films. The trailer also introduced two new avengers who were teased in the post-credits scene of the second Captain America film. The antagonist is a mechanised robot who is willing to take down mankind for "Ultron's future".

Iconography
The Avengers will be in big battles judging by the overall damage that is being presented in some scenes. The famous shield that Captain America had is broken to signify that this enemy is bigger and more stronger than the enemy.
Setting
The film takes place in America like all other hit Hollywood films.

Genre
Action/ Sci-Fi
Narrative
Many years after Rise of the Machines and the Skynet holocaust had wiped out humanity. John Connor is on a journey to stop the Skynet facility that produces the "Terminators" and hopefully restore peace for humanity after the war against machines

As his home planet Krypton was destroyed, the codex was handed down to him in birth to keep safe from Zod and was sent off to earth.  Now he must keep the codex away from Zod as he grows to understand that that Zod intends to colonise Earth making every human die as they can't survive in the atmosphere of Krypton.

Iconography
The trailer has the iconic hero fighting of the villan in this action packed film with chaotic fight scenes. Also the overall hero overcome all odds throughout which is shown in Clark's struggles to being a krypton rather than human.

Setting
The film is based in America like all other Hollywood action film specifically Manhattan and Kansas. It is also sometimes in Antarctica for a little part.

Minority Report Shot-by-Shot Analysis

Medium close up introducing protagonists threat. This close up shows all the police forces who are about to target and confront Tom Cruise. The grim look on the cops signify that they're up to no good or potentially going to harm the protagonist. Also the amount of cops will put the viewer in tension as Tom as the disadvantages in number.

The wide shot shows the area that the hero will run through. The car will act as an obstacle for the hero to overcome as he attempts to run away from the cops. The protagonist to the right also shows that the wide shot is a little preview to where Tom has to go through. This could also put the viewer in suspense as to how he'll try to escape from a sort of narrow gap between the car and the wall.

This close up would normally be associated with dialogue or to show emotion from a character. These close ups also put Tom in a tight situation where he has what seems to be no other form of escape. The close up also shows the overall background or area that Tom is stuck in.

Another close up featuring a tear to show emotion as well as facial expressions.
over the shoulder shot with the victim under attack by the bully showing the current situation between the victim under attack by the bully. The over the shoulder camera allows the viewer to see the expression of the victim as well as the aggression the bully is putting at the victim.
Medium shot of the soon to be victim allows the audience to have a glance as to what the victim looks like and his surroundings.

Fruit Bowl Challenge

The colour pallet I used is the US Woodland camouflage which is a very common colour scheme in the US Army. This camouflage has a familiar look to the Urban colour pallet but has a nature colour scheme to the fruits. The colour comprises of secondary colours which make it different compared to the standard colours we're used to with the original fruits which mainly was made up of primary colours.

This colour pallet I used is the vibrant colour pallet which is a bright colour scheme for the picture. This colour pallet is familiar to the standard colours the fruits would normally be. The colour scheme is also using the colours from the background which had a good variety of colours.

Media Analysis: Guardians of the Galaxy ad

Language
The key convention that tells the audience that this is an advert is the promotion of the date of release highlighted at the bottom to attract the attention of the audience of when the movie may come out. Another convention could be the names of the actors at the top so fans of the actors displayed on the photo for instance will automatically recognise them and would like to watch the film. Also the statement "from the studio that brought you avengers" will make people think this movie will be a well produced film knowing that Avengers was one of the most grossed film of all time placed in 3rd behind Titanic and Avatar which could make people think that the film will have high expectations. The explosions behind the actors could indicate that the film will overall be an action film. Also the main characters in front of the explosive background suggests these characters are more likely to be destructive people.

Institution
Marvel Studios are the producers for the film and are competing against DC's quality. Marvel is a big company that makes content related to heroes and science fiction. "In Summer 2014" was supposed to imply they were competing against DC's Batman v Superman Dawn of justice which has been postponed to 2016.

Audience
The target audience is mainly Marvel fans and specifically Guardians of the Galaxy fans who have been waiting for the team to be in a feature length film. This is also targeted to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans who are restrained in the live action story of the heroes instead of the comics which is still in relation to the films. The age would on average be a 12+ mainly male (70%M/30%F). This is mainly due to the action genre the marvel films always present in their action scenes. The targeted demo-graph is mainly males at the age of 12+ who are marvel or are into the action genre.

Representation
The film is mainly targeted at males due to the fact that most of the team is male. Also the fact that Dave Bautista who is an inactive WWE Wrestler under the alias of Batista in the ring could branch out fans of this memorable wrestler into action. This could also rival to DC's Black Adam who will be casted by Dwayne Johnson who is also an inactive WWE wrestler.

TV News Bulletin

1) What were the five stories your group chose to broadcast?

Greenford news story: Enrichment Week, Residential, and Work Experience. We chose this story because these events will happen later on this following week which a majority of GHS students will be aware of.
National news story: Antibiotics Resistance disease warning by the PM. We chose this story because diseases are dangerous and letting everyone know about antibiotic resistant diseases and how to counter them for future reference.
London news story: The average price of a house is £400,000. We chose this story because those who are interested in property maybe interested in this topic.
Sports news story: Barcelona will begin negotiations with Liverpool on Wednesday over a deal for Reds striker Luis Suarez. We chose this story because those who are Barcelona and Liverpool or Luis Suarez maybe affected by this.
Funny news story: Woman gives birth outside Primark at Birmingham City. We chose this story because since a majority of the stories are boring, this story may attract viewers and bring a bright side to this 60 second news bulletin.

3) What order did you broadcast the stories in? Why did you place the stories in that order?

We went with the National news topic first as this was an important topic. Next was the Greenford topic as the majority of students will be informed/reminded of Residential, Enrichment Week, and Work Experience. After that was London and since a majority of the target demo-graph live in London might find the houses priced at 400K be very essential. Sports was up next and we picked a Controversial Player Luis Suarez who had bit players in recent player, had been offered to go to Barcelona. And finally we ended with the funny story to end the bulletin out of the blue.
4) How did you make sure the script was the right length?

I made sure the stories were at the right length by dividing 60 by 5 which is 12 so we had a rough estimate to make each story 12 seconds to make sure each story had equal time for telling each story. As well as checking to see if the presenter can speak in a fast and understandable pace.

5) How did you make sure each story was clear and easy to understand?

I made sure that each story was easy to understand by using vocabulary that our target demo-graph would either understand or use in a daily basis. We also made sure by testing it with a small preview to the team to check and see if they can understand and find improvements for the bulletin.

6) How did you make sure the broadcast was professional?

We made sure the bulletin was professional by using specialist vocabulary. We also made sure the presenter can speak in a fast and understandable pace so the viewer can get some small summary of what has happened with the 5 topics we were assigned.

7) What was your specific role in the group?
My specific role was editor by searching for appropriate and acceptable stories for each topic with help and approval from others in the group as well as having to write a script for the presenter.

8) Rate your group’s ability to work collaboratively out of 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent)
3.5/5

How could your group have worked effectively as a team?

We could've worked more effectively as a team by not getting distracted and stop arguing against each other as that would get the team no where.
10) Finally, what would you have done differently if you were given the opportunity to do this again?

Now that I have the experience to understand what to do, I'll change some time management by prioritising some of the work other the others i.e Topics over practice.

Media Introduction

  1. I chose media because I'd like a job at BBC.
  2. For now I'd say print but hearing about the project and how good it is, my mind might change through time.
  3. The skills to Photoshop and analyse better for English.
  4. I'm hoping for a B or at least a C.
  5. Last film I watched was The Amazing Spider-man 2. And for programmes I watched Agents of Shield (excluding the World Cup) which is based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  6. It is appealing to audiences as it has action and sci-fi which is a famous topic to use in recent films such as Transformers Age of Extinction.
  7. Last used my tablet supplied by my school and my PC.
  8. I mostly use my Tablet to access the media via apps which is easy to access.
  9.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-28014035 The main story was about the Judge who disagrees about David Cameron's comments on Coulson's (former News of the World chief) Conviction. I'd say it caught attention as they had the prime minister who is well known.
  10. Same goes for Guardian about rebuking the former chief of News of the World.
